Get muddy in the trails in and around Wainuiomata Mountain Bike Park, Wainuiomata – rated #5 in New Zealand by the Trailforks riding community!

Ride lush bush trails that are great year-round, perfect on sunny days for hilltop views and often sheltered under the canopy when it’s windy (though expect slippery sections after rain).

Set in the hills overlooking Wainuiomata, Waiu Park offers a growing network of trails (around 18) ranging from easy rides through to technical descents like Spoonhill an advanced, downhill-only track for experienced riders.

How to get there

Whether you’re new to mountain biking or chasing a gut-busting climb or technical downhill, there’s something for all ages and abilities, including a family-friendly skills area.

Ride 4WD tracks and firebreaks, weave through native bush and wetlands, cross streams, and take in sweeping views across the Hutt Valley and Wellington Harbour.

The trails are built and maintained by volunteers from the Wainuiomata Trail Project, supported by Hutt City Council.

For a longer ride, link into Te Whiti Riser and the ridgeline 4WD tracks for a full day exploring the Eastern Valley hills.

A Day at the Wainuiomata Mountain Bike Park

8:00am — Start at Seashore Cabaret. Coffee, something decent to eat, and a slow start by the water.

9:00am — Head over the hill to Wainuiomata. It’s a quick drive, closer than it feels.

9:30am — Arrive at Wainuiomata Mountain Bike Park. Park up, get sorted, and pick your trails.

9:45am — Ride the trails. A good mix of flow and technical depending on what you’re after. Easy to tailor—do a couple of loops or stay longer if you’re feeling it.

Allow 2–2.5 hours riding.

12:30pm — Quick refuel in Wainuiomata. Stop at The Bakehouse — simple, reliable, and exactly what you need post-ride.

1:30pm — Head back to Petone. No need to overpack the day, this is where it slows down.

2:00pm — Land on Jackson Street. Grab a second coffee or something cold and actually stop. Visit Caffiend or similar – easy, no pressure.

3:00pm (optional wander) — If you’re feeling human again, take a slow wander along Jackson Street. You’ll find an array of boutique stores such as Wanda Harland.

5:00pm — Dinner on Jackson Street. We recommend Viva México or Lucky Cat!

LOCAL TIP:

Not far from the base of Wainuiomata Hill, Miss Fortune’s is a favourite stop for counter food and a Good Fortune Coffee fix.

Best route

  • Catch the 160 bus service to Parkway, off Wainuiomata Road (Stop 9953) and walk down Waiu Street to the carpark.

  • Head over the hill to Wainuiomata, and park at the end of Waiu Street.
