Pop Up Hutt connects people with ideas to available spaces across the city centre.
We're creating opportunities for makers, artists, businesses, community groups and creatives to bring something new to life, while helping activate vacant shopfronts and add energy to the city centre.
Some activations might run for a weekend. Others might stay a little longer. Every space, idea and activation will be different.

Pop Up Hutt is a programme designed to temporarily activate vacant spaces across Lower Hutt, bringing more activity, vibrancy and foot traffic into the city centre. It gives businesses, makers, creatives, community groups and people with new ideas an opportunity to test a concept, reach new customers, share their talents or try something different in a physical space.

We’re open to a wide range of ideas, including retail pop-ups, workshops, exhibitions, tastings, product launches, creative projects, community activations and experiences. Existing businesses are encouraged to apply too.

No. Pop Up Hutt is also for people wanting to test an idea before committing to a permanent space.

It depends on your idea and the space available. Activations could range from a few days or a weekend through to several weeks. Tell us what you have in mind in your EOI and we can explore what might work.

All activations are likely to involve some costs, although these will vary depending on the space, type of activation, and how long you occupy the site. In some cases, costs may be minimal, while for others, businesses may be expected to cover the full cost of leasing the space.
We can help facilitate discussions with property owners and work through what is involved. Any costs associated with a space will be clearly discussed and agreed before you commit.

We’ll help connect suitable ideas with available spaces, assist with navigating the practical details of getting set up and support the promotion of selected Pop Up Hutt activations.

Pop Up Hutt does not generally provide funding for activations. However, we may provide support through access to space, advice, promotion, and or point you to where you may be able to access some funding.

You’ll need to bring what’s required to operate your pop-up, which may include furniture, displays, equipment, stock, signage or other items specific to your activation. What is already available will vary between spaces.

Selected Pop Up Hutt activations may be supported through Hutt Valley NZ channels and the wider Pop Up Hutt programme. The level of promotion will vary depending on the activation and timing

Yes. Workshops, demonstrations, classes, tastings and other experiences are encouraged, provided they are suitable for the available space.

That’s okay. You don’t need to have every detail figured out before submitting an EOI. Tell us what you’d like to do and we can explore whether there’s a suitable opportunity.

No. Spaces are limited and each activation needs to be matched with a suitable location. Submitting an EOI helps us understand your idea, requirements and preferred timing and budget.

Requirements will depend on what you’re planning to do. Food, events and some other activities may have additional requirements. We’ll help identify what needs to be considered, but businesses are responsible for meeting the requirements relevant to their activation.

Yes. If we identify a potential space for your idea, we can arrange for you to see it and discuss what would be involved before anything is confirmed.
