Lower Hutt’s newest track, the Te Whiti Riser is an easy 4km walk/ride to the top of the Eastern Hills from Te Whiti Park. Park your car opposite 197 Riverside Drive and begin your adventure. Family friendly, return either via the same track or many of the others that exist along the Eastern Hills.
Easy. 1 hour.
From Birchville Dam, follow the walkway along a graded climb out of the valley to Cannon Point, giving breath-taking views over the Hutt Valley, Wellington and the Kaikoura Mountains. Pick from two descents - the shorter taking you down the southern face of the hill on a zig-zag trail, or follow the forest access road down the western ridge for a longer descent.
Intermediate. 3-4 hours.
A hard climb to the highest point in Belmont Regional Park with spectacular views to Kapiti, Kaikoura and the Tararuas. Check out the WWII ammunition bunkers and the Korokoro Dam on your way back.

Green, green and more green all around you with views east to the Wairarapa Coast and over the pristine bush where Wellington sources it's water in the Orongorongo Valley. Prepare yourself for an all day hike and a reward that is well worth it!

A gentle walk among lush forest takes you to a lookout above the wharf - take the zig zag track to complete the loop. The forest track is great for buggies (forest track only) and kids wanting to burn off that ice cream from the cafés below.
Easy. 25 minute loop.
Take a walk around the Pencarrow Coast and appreciate Wellington and the Kaikoura Mountains from above the head of the harbour at New Zealand's first permanent lighthouse. Hire a bike and carry on around the Pencarrow Coast to the Parangahau Lakes.
Easy. 3 hours return.
Walk to the top of the Boulder Hill track for views over to Plimmerton or try the loop track for a solid hour and a half cardio work out.
Intermediate. 3 hours return.
Popular with Wellington daytrippers you can walk amongst 200 year old rata along the main ridge track. Complete the loop from Korimako Track.
