The 115km Remutaka Cycle Trail runs from historic Petone, to Wairarapa, then to Wainuiomata.
Pedal along one of New Zealand’s 22 ‘Great Rides’ starting and finishing in the Hutt Valley. The track runs alongside the Hutt River from Petone to Upper Hutt, then it’s up and over the Remutaka Rail Trail (the trains now go through the hill you’ll ride over) to neighbouring Wairarapa.
Make your cycle a leisurely experience by breaking it into smaller pieces. Pitch a tent, cosy up in a cabin or book a bed and breakfast like Lalapanzi, just around the corner from Petone's Jackson Street with 60+ eateries in 800metres and to fill your drink bottles with pure artesian water.
9am - Start the day with a hot cuppa from a Petone roastery, then slowly cycle along the waterfront to Alfred Memelink Artspace.
10:45am - Detour along the Eastern Bays to Pencarrow Lighthouse.
12:15pm - Enjoy a picnic lunch at Pencarrow Lighthouse, overlooking the Cook Strait.
2:30pm - Rejoin the Remutaka Cycle Trail and follow the Hutt River.
4pm - Head to Silverstream Retreat for a relaxed evening.
9:30am - Pop across the road to Silver Stream Railway to learn about the trails heritage.
10:30am - Follow the trail until Harcourt Park, the filming location for The Gardens of Isengard in The Lord of the Rings.
12pm - Opt for a packed lunch at Tunnel Gulley before unpacking a torch.
4pm - Stretch the legs at Wairarapa Moana Wetlands.
Continue at a leisurely pace, and arrive at Wharekauhau Country Estate by 5:30pm - just in time for dinner!
10am - Head off for the last leg of the journey - only 1.5hr until the end of the Remutaka Cycle Trail at Orongorongo.
Pre-book a shuttle to return to Lower Hutt or continue cycling along Wainuiomata's Coast Road for an overnight option at Remutaka Forest Park - and fitter riders can venture up to Wainuiomata Mountain Bike Park.
Explore the Hutt Valley like a local. Discover our neighbourhood and big backyard full of unexpected treasures along the trail. Hop on a train, bus or ferry to explore seaside villages, boutique shopping and find your next locally-roasted coffee and craft beer fix.
