Our big backyard

With so many scenic reserves, forests and farm parks literally minutes away from our urban streets, it couldn’t be easier to get back to nature

Pakuratahi Forest

Pack a picnic and head to Pakuratahi Forest for a day of mountain biking, hiking and bird spotting. Suitable for all rider abilities and with a range of community-built tracks, you'll be able to choose from leisurely smooth gravel tracks with the family, right through to downhill singletrack to get the adrenaline flowing. Keep your eyes peeled and whits sharp for New Zealand's smallest bird, the Rifleman, who's high pitched call is hard to hear. You'll also see kereru, karearea, fantails, whiteheads and tui and if you are near a stream, you might spot native eels and koura (freshwater crayfish).
