Love local walks in your 'bubble'

Local, short walks are ok, but maintain social distance and only with your isolating household

Yes it's all still possible. Locally, near home. In your immediate neighbourhood.


Start and finish your walk, run or bike at home.

The New Zealand Mountain Safety (MSC) says we can go walking and running during COVID-19 Alert Level 3, but to keep it local. The MSC says stick to your local area, walk or run to the local park, go for a short walk in the local bush reserve, take your mountain bike up your local bike track, but keep your adventures close to home and always maintain the necessary social distancing measures.

The Ministry of Health tell us to stay in our household"bubble". Otherwise stay at home, stay out of the backcountry, put the longer overnight trip plans on ice and save them for another day.

Ensure you:

  • Avoid ‘high touch' or shared use items like seats, benches, handrails, and playgrounds.  
  • Do not meet others for the activity and don't  stop to talk to others (but give them a happy smile, say hello and check they’re ok as you pass them)


No overnight tramping or hunting

All Department of Conservation (DOC) huts and campsites are closed due to COVID-19. It is not appropriate to participate in these activities at the present time.

Most, if not all, public toilets are closed. 

All DOC huts and campsite bookings are cancelled. 

Trails are open, but facilities are closed across our parks.

You can't self-isolate at a DOC hut, lodge or campsite.

Waiu (Mountain Bike) Park in Wainuiomata is reopening but you will notice some things such as water fountains will remain closed.
