Can R&D help you gain from tax losses?

To be eligible the company must:
- be a tax resident in New Zealand
- have a net loss in the corresponding tax year
- have eligible R&D expenditure for the income year
- have sufficient R&D wage intensity
- meet the corporate eligibility criteria
- own (solely or jointly) the intellectual property and know-how that results from the R&D activity.

New funding for innovation
The Government is launching two new grants aimed at strengthening support for businesses doing research, development and innovation.
Both grants will be available to customers from mid-September 2022.
Ārohia / Innovation Trailblazer Grant
Ārohia / the Innovation Trailblazer Grant will be a contestable grant which will support non-R&D innovation activities not covered by the Research & Development Tax Incentive (RDTI). It is designed to help businesses whose innovation activity is likely to build capabilities or create opportunities with wider benefits across the New Zealand innovation system. It will be targeted at businesses doing pioneering innovation or building platforms that will help other innovators.
New to R&D Grant
The New to R&D Grant will support businesses in the early stages of their R&D investment to establish an R&D programme and build their R&D capability. It will provide businesses with a smooth on-ramp to the Research & Development Tax Incentive as their R&D programme becomes established.
