Just across the harbour from the capital, the Hutt Valley is a place where communities thrive in natural surrounds
Tourism in the Hutt Valley
- $250 million was spent by visitors in the year to September 2019 to Lower Hutt and $50 million in Upper Hutt.
- Around two-thirds of visitor spend is from kiwis and a third from international visitors.
- Aucklanders and Wellingtonians spend the most here followed by our neighbours in Manawatu-Whanganui and then Canterbury.
- Australians represent a third of our international visitors followed by China, USA, UK and South East Asia.

Who we are
The Hutt City Council and Upper Hutt City Council work together with businesses, events, and organisations to attract day and short break visitors to the Hutt Valley, particularly from the Wellington region. We do this to help grow our business community, bring more people to our events and attractions, and to showcase everything we have to offer in our valley of villages.
Our Action Plan
The Hutt Valley Tourism Action Plan provides strategies and actions for collaborative and consistent delivery of visitor experiences, services, infrastructure and marketing between the different tourism partners – Councils, agencies, land managers and tourism industry operators – in the Hutt Valley.
As we work together more, we, Hutt City Council and Upper Hutt City Council, are looking to build partnerships with local businesses and groups who help make our Valley the awesome place it is today.
If you would like to know more about the Tourism Action Plan and how we can work with your business, get in touch.
