FRI 02 MAR 6:00 P.M. - 7:15 P.M.

'parting is such sweet sorrow' - Romeo and Juliet, the passionate and tragic love story is reimagined by writer and director Geraldine Brophy for a contemporary setting.

Using a seamless mix of of Shakespeare's original text and new dialogue, romeojuliet@twilight imagines a star-cross'd couple at the twilight of their lives - residents at Twilight Village retirement complex.

Romeo and his old friend, Mercutio are independent residents. Juliet is a permanent assisted-care resident with early onset dementia. She and Romeo fall in love and wish to marry, spending their twilight years together. This relationship, so late in life, is a cause of grave concern to Juliet’s granddaughter, Lady Capulet.

Paris, an elder law specialist, is hired Lady Capulet to persuade Juliet to sign power of attorney over to her before her dementia becomes worse. If she insists on her relationship with Romeo, she will be moved to another complex. Juliet and her Romeo cannot face separation from each other and choose to remain forever joined in death...

A professional and community co-production, romeojuliet@twilight will see professional actors joined by residents from the Summerset community, who will take minor speaking roles and providing a musical accompaniment to the action. An original score by young upcoming composer Sam Jones accompanies the show.

Nextstage Theatre’s production will offer a rich and rewarding experience about older people in our communities and the challenges faced by them, and the passionate and overwhelming nature of Love in later life.
