Once described by colleagues as a ‘jet-powered meteor’, Dame Doreen Blumhardt (1914–2009) was a unique figure in the Aotearoa New Zealand pottery scene.
From craft education to advocacy, hosting and publishing, Doreen was central to the development of craft in schools and fellow potters were spurred on by her generosity, energy and vigour.
Doreen Blumhardt: Jet Powered Meteor shows some of the key friendships that she developed over her lifetime, featuring her own works alongside a range of pots from her personal collection.
The exhibition highlights some of the mentors and relationships that New Zealand potters shared. Anglo-Oriental pottery traditions were important for the growth of domestic ware here, but there was also a rich local context and the natural environment played a key role in the practice of many potters.
Featuring works by Tsunezo Arao, Barry Brickell, Michael Cardew, David Carson-Parker, Len Castle, John Chappell, Crewenna Pottery, Shoji Hamada, Jack Laird, Leach Pottery, Kanjiro Kawai, Takeichi Kawai, Helen Mason, John Parker, Lucie Rie, Tatsuzo Shimaoka, Mirek Smisek, Peter Stichbury, and Graeme Storm.
