Getting here

The Hutt Valley is in the middle of New Zealand, just up the road from Wellington CBD

Drive here

Driving from Wellington, take State Highway 2 north.  Check the latest road conditions here.

When traveling from the north, take State Highway 1 south as far as Plimmerton then turn on to State Highway 58 and at Haywards turn right to Lower Hutt or left to Upper Hutt.

Fly in with the Airport Flyer

From Wellington International Airport it’s a 25 minute drive offpeak to the Hutt Valley. If you’re more of a public transport type, you’ll need to catch the orange ‘AirportFlyer’ bus, which runs from the airport, through the Wellington CBD and Petone to Queensgate Shopping Centre in the heart of Lower Hutt.

Travel by train

Trains run regularly through Hutt Valley between Wellington and Upper Hutt railway stations. At peak times, take care not to catch the express trains if you want to hop off along the way.

You can buy tickets at Wellington Station or on the train in cash. Here's a guide to the fare you will need.

Come by bus

If you want a convenient and cheap way to travel to Lower Hutt from around the North Island then InterCity is the bus for you. Book online or visit our i-SITE Visitor Centre who can book it for you.

Travel by Ferry

Travel between the North Island and South Island by ferry on either the Interislander or the Bluebridge. Ferries run both ways a number of times a day and can carry cars.
