Wainuiomata Recreation Area

Discover pure New Zealand amongst 340 hectares of native bush in a peaceful and sheltered valley.

Walk the Nikau Track (2km) up to mature beech forest or the Gums Loop track (3km) to a swing bridge. Trails are marked from the car park. A short walk from the carpark opens out to a great river swimming spot and picnic table.

While you're in the park keep an eye out for some truly remarkable wildlife. The North Island robin and North Island brown kiwi have both been re-introduced to the area and the populations are thriving.

If you're into geocaching, or want a different way to explore, check out New Zealand's oldest geocache. It's even the sixth oldest registered geocache in the world. Head over to geocaching.com to find out more about this popular exploration activity.
