Walk of Champions

Take a walk and discover 135 plaques on Jackson Street commemorating Petone sportspeople who have represented New Zealand or have been national champions.

20 years ago Roy Hewson, Kevin Raynor and Andy Leslie were chatting in a menswear store. On the counter was a newspaper and a report about a Hollywood star leaving the impression of his hands in wet concrete in California's Walk of Stars. One of them said, 'we ought to do that for our rugby greats'.

And that's how Petone got its Walk of Champions. Brass plaques honour sportspeople from all manner of codes - hockey to rowing, swimming to table tennis, along a kilometer of footpath on Jackson Street.

The plaques can be found on both sides of the road between 83 and 355 Jackson Street.
