Ride the Remutaka Cycle Trail and explore the Hutt Valley - plus take a detour to the Eastern bays and Pencarrow Coast.

Take it easy, take the train

Cruise across Wellington Harbour on the East By West ferry, hop on a Wairarapa-bound train for easy bike carrying from Wellington to the start of sections at Petone or Maymorn.
Let someone else sort the transport and jump on a shuttle, However you travel, its just a short trip up the road from Wellington to the start of the Remutaka Cycle Trail. 

 

Detour to NZ's first lighthouse

Cruise the bays by pedal power along the Pencarrow Coast to visit New Zealand's first lighthouse, lit in 1859. Venture to the stunning Pencarrow Lakes, Kohangapiripiri and Kohangatera, and surrounding wetlands as you take in big coastal views. Continue south to Turakirae Head which becomes home to up to 500 fur seals each winter.

 

Relax by the water

Cool off after a few hours pedalling and create a splash by jumping off Days Bay Wharf or Taita Rock along the Hutt River. If free flowing water isn't your thing, try the 80m open-air waterslide at Wainuiomata Summer Pool before relaxing in the spa.

 

Go off road

Get muddy at Waiu Park, Lower Hutt's free mountain bike park. Pedal along easy climbs, technical downhills and beginner tracks. Ride from the Hutt River up the Te Whiti Riser for a detour with stunning harbour views.

 

Take it easy, look around, stay longer

Stay at Kenlea Cottage, just around the corner from Jackson Street Petone where you can grab a bite from over 60 eateries in 800m. Sample craft beers at Brewtowns four brew-pubs, wander Main Street for a eclectic mix of stores before stopping the night at Silverstream Retreat.

 

Put on your elf ears and recreate movie moments

Relive the magic of Middle-Earth along the trail with sights from The Lord of the Rings and put yourself in the scene at Rivendell in Kaitoke Regional Park. Stop in at Stansborough Mill to see the makers of the movies' unique costumes and woven wool treasures.
