Nature escapes

Tune out in nature

Stop. Take a deep breath.

Smell the fresh scent of lush bush. Discover one of our waterfalls hidden in native bush - including Wellington's highest at Percy Scenic Reserve. Remember to take a torch with you and explore the weta and glow-worm cave on your return.

Wander where wild kiwi roam

in the Orongorongo Valley, find a picnic spot and let the world fall away. Relax by a burbling stream or make it a multi-day adventure and bunk in a backcounty hut. Stay up late for a midnight listening mission. You may not be able to see Kiwi, but you might hear one of the over 120 wild birds that live in the Remutaka Forest Park.

Another gloriously sunny weekend at the hut #summerdays

Explore an island steeped in local history

Take a ferry across to Matiu Somes Island wildlife sanctuary in the middle of the harbour. Once a Maori Pa, quarantine station, a wartime prison and now home to tuatara, weta and little blue penguins.

Cast a line

Try a days fising charter out to the depths of the Cook Strait or head up the Wainuiomata Coast for stunning scenery and surfcasting. The Hutt River is a great place to fish for trout, with excellent access right through the Hutt Valley. This really is a fabulous place to fish.
