Remutaka (Rimutaka) Cycle Trail

The 115km Rimutaka Cycle Trail runs from historic Petone, to Wairarapa, then to Wainuiomata

It's graded easy to intermediate and takes two-three days to complete.

One of New Zealand’s 22 ‘Great Rides’, the track runs alongside the Hutt River from historic Petone to Upper Hutt. Then it’s up and over the Remutaka Rail Trail (the trains now go through the hill you’ll ride over) to neighbouring Wairarapa. Head back down and along the wild, remote coast to Orongorongo in Wainuiomata to finish the ride, or catch a shuttle back.

Along the way

you’ll uncover traces of New Zealand’s rich heritage, ancient Māori settlement sites, European colonial history and the legacy of stone and steel from the days of steam-powered rail. Running alongside it all is a stunning landscape of mountains, forest and sea that is pure New Zealand.

The trail is mostly graded easy, with some intermediate sections, and can be ridden in two to three days. Or choose a single section and make it a day trip.

Itinerary ideas

There’s a great trail option for you whether you usually ride to the dairy for ice cream or are the type of cyclist who owns their own Lycra. You might ride a section and call it quits or take on the lot. Here’s the sections and distances of the trail.

Plan before you go. Weather can be changeable and some of the trail sections are remote with little or no cellphone coverage.
