Smiling Windmills

Enjoy the simple pleasure of watching a windmill spin in the breeze.

The Smiling Windmills at Avalon Park has become a favourite public art installation for locals and visitors alike.

The huge, brightly coloured metal windmills stand at the southern end of the park and spin in the wind as easily as the small paper windmills we all remember. Designed by Leon van den Eijkel, he says "irksome wind is an adult thing. In The Smiling Windmills I recall my childhood and the joy wind gave me."

This dynamic sculpture was gifted to the city of Lower Hutt by E Tu Akakairangi Hutt Public Art Trust after the public fell in love with it at the Shapeshifter exhibition in 2008.
