Rock climbing at Baring Head

Baring Head was the birthplace of bouldering (climbing without ropes) in New Zealand

Follow Wainuiomata’s Coast Road to the end and you’ll arrive. To the west, across Wainuiomata River is a popular, outdoor rock climbing spot.

  • Bouldering at Baring Head is free
  • Be aware of the conditions and don't cross the river if it is in flood
  • Take your rubbish with you when you leave
  • Mobile reception is patchy at best. Don't rely on your mobile phone
