There are many walks in the Hutt Valley region. From the easy Hutt River Trail and Korokoro Gorge, to the moderate Butterfly Creek or the extreme tramps through the Tararuas.

Take the easy walk up to the first dam built in New Zealand and then if you feel up to it, add on a more challenging loop walk up to Belmont Trig for some of the best 360 degree views in the region.

This easy walk was originally an important route for the first settlers of the region to gain access to the neighbouring region of Wairarapa. The flat coastal walk is full of history and at the furthest point you are treated with a look around the first lighthouse built in New Zealand and the beautiful Kohangapiripiri and Kohangatera Lakes.
This is 28km of very easy, flat tracks and pathways that follow the Hutt River from Hikoikoi Reserve on the Wellington harbour foreshore, through to the Akatarawa River in Upper Hutt.
Two million years of movement in the Wellington fault line has helped form one of the region's most powerful rivers. Starting in the southern Tararua Ranges, it flows through the Hutt Valley to the Petone foreshore.
Along the way there are four golf corses, swimming holes, trout fishing spots, play grounds, shopping, a campground at either end, parks and reserves and all following the Hutt River.
The Hutt River Trail is suitable for walking, biking and push chairs.
This is a must do walk as it's not too long and only mildly challenging. Great views across the harbour before you drop over the back of the coastal hills into the hidden valleys behind.
