Rock Climbing & Bouldering

The end of the road heading south out of Wainuiomata meets a wild stretch of coastline. Across the Wainuiomata River from the end of the road at the entrance to Wellington Harbour is one of the North Island's premier rock climbing spots, the Baring Head boulders.

The boulders provide challenging, short, steep climbs and come with a complimentary sandy landing. An overhang of greywacke called the Seaward Boulder Arete on the low-tide mark has the foot of the rock on dry land while the top overhangs the ocean.
