Exploring the Outdoors

The Hutt Valley has dozens of tracks and trails through fantastic native bush areas, kilometres of coastline around Wellington Harbour and along the Hutt River, with a huge range of outdoor recreation adventures!

Passive and extreme options are avilable for mountain biking, tramping, sailing, kayaking, canoeing, camping and any number of other outdoor pursuits.

Walking and Tramping

There are many walks in the Hutt Valley region.  From the easy Hutt River Trail and Korokoro Gorge, to the moderate Butterfly Creek or the extreme tramps through the Tararuas.

Mountain Biking in the Hutt Valley

Mountain biking is a challenging and exhilarating way to explore some of the more beautiful and little known parts of this region. Whether you want historic trails, hill country farmland or tricky forest tracks, you will find a suitable track in the Hutt Valley.

Hutt Valley Regional Parks

Access to the regional parks and Department of Conservation areas is what the Hutt Valley does best.  You are never more than a kilometre or two from an entrance way to a path that will lead you as far as you choose.

A short walk or mountain bike, or a multi-day adventure into the wilderness.  A slow stroll or cycle along a beach, or maximum effort to climb a mountain.  Rivers or beaches, hills or mountains, forests or above the tree line; you'll find it in the Hutt Valley.

Wellington Fishing Charters

Pete and John with great help from their hardworking deckhands John Totoro, Johan van Rensburg, Alan Chambers and Mat Dobson run a boat each from both the west and south coast as well as many trips to the Marlborough Sounds. They are professional operators who have a very good reputation for catching fish and looking after their guests.

Rock Climbing & Bouldering

The end of the road heading south out of Wainuiomata meets a wild stretch of coastline.  Across the Wainuiomata River from the end of the road at the entrance to Wellington Harbour is one of the North Island's premier rock climbing spots, the Baring Head boulders.
