This is the Wellington Provincial Centennial Memorial, which was built in 1940 to commemorate the arrival of the first New Zealand Company Settlers on 22nd January 1840.
Designed by architect Horace Massey, opened by Governor General Lord Galway at a ceremony on 22nd January 1940. The bathing pavilions were converted into a museum by the Petone Borough Council in 1977. The focus being the migration and settlement of the Wellington region and the social history of the Lower Hutt Valley.
