Maori Treasures

Petone Settlers Museum

This is the Wellington Provincial Centennial Memorial, which was built in 1940 to commemorate the arrival of the first New Zealand Company Settlers on 22nd January 1840. Designed by architect Horace Massey and opened by Governor General Lord Galway at a ceremony on 22nd January 1940.  The bathing pavilions were converted into a museum by the Petone Borough Council in 1977.

Silver Stream Railway Museum

A large collection of steam locomotives run on part of the original 1875 Wellington-Wairarapa line around the foothills of Silverstream.  

The Silver Stream Railway was incorporated in 1967 and has a strong membership comprised entirely of volunteers.  

The Society's policy of preserving and restoring railway items has resulted in an extensive collection of operational equipment.
