On the shores of Wellington’s harbour, the Petone Settlers Museum occupies one of New Zealand’s most significant memorial buildings – the Wellington Provincial Centennial Memorial.
The memorial was built to commemorate the arrival of the first New Zealand Company Settlers on Pito-one’s shores on 22nd January 1840. Serving also as a bathing pavilion, the Wellington Provincial Centennial Memorial became the heart of Petone’s thriving beach scene.
The exhibition, Tatou Tatou celebrates the history of the local area with a contemporary visitor experience. Tatou Tatou commemorates the historic meeting of the great Maori Te Atiawa chiefs, Te Wharepouri and Te Puni, and the first British settlers, on Pito-one’s (Petone) shores in 1840. The exhibition also explores the ongoing ramifications settlement for both Maori and Pakeha. The title means ‘we, you and I’ or ‘all of us’.
The building was designed by architect Horace Massey, opened by Governor General Lord Galway at a ceremony on 22nd January 1940. The bathing pavilions were converted into a museum by the Petone Borough Council in 1977. The focus being the migration and settlement of the Wellington region and the social history of the lower Hutt Valley.
