Jackson Street Galleries, Cafes & History

The longest street in town and the landing point of the early settlers. Today it is a must for the savvy shopper, gallery wanderer and anyone looking for a gourmet experience with many cafes and restaurants.

Oyster Gallery, Te Puna Wai Ora, Village Beads, Antonio at La Bella Italia

  • Some must see shops include Oyster or N.Zique for unique NZ gifts, Wanda Harland design store.  Ontrays, Bookfeast and Cultured are must do stores for foodies.
  • There are some great galleries with special mention to Oyster as real a stand out.
  • Kids or young at heart will love making their own souvenir at Swish Dish or Village Beads.
  • Have a drink bottle handy for a refill at Te Puna Wai Ora (The Spring of Life) pure, free artesian water naturally treated by layers of sand and gravel. Experience how water is supposed to taste.
  • There are many cafes and restaurants along Jackson Street.  One fast becoming a local legend is Gusto Bistro, a finalist in the Cuisine New Zealand Restaurant of the Year Awards 2010
  • Not many restaurants can boast an award from their embassy but that's just the case with La Bella Italia. This Italian restaurant is a Jackson Street must do for Wellingtonians, so take the tip. La Bella is at the station end of Jackson Street tucked into Nevis Street. Ask to see Antonio.

  • Get a taste of days gone by with a visit to the old Petone Police Station and Jail.  Then take a stroll along the Petone foreshore to the pier and Petone Settlers Museum.

  • The Wellington Region has an exceptional public transport network and it's easy to get to each of these attractions by train to Petone and then use the bus network. Or catch the express service Airport Flyer to Jackson Street, Petone.
