Wainuiomata Water Walk

Applications are again open for a free chance to see some of the best pre-European lowland forest in the lower North Island.

The Wainuiomata Water Collection Area features pristine forest managed to provide high quality water to the Wellington region. Access to the forest is limited to monthly (except April) guided walking tours. All groups are guided by Greater Wellington parks rangers and approved volunteer interpreters.

 

What to bring:
Backpack with a waterproof jacket, warm clothes, tramping boots or strong lace-up walking shoes, water and a picnic lunch and/or snacks.  On longer trips than two hours take thermal leggings, a long-sleeved top, a warm hat and gloves.  Always take a sun hat and sunblock.

 

This is a FREE walk but entry is by application

Note: People who have had gastric upsets eg diarrhoea in the two weeks preceding the walk are not permitted in the catchment.

Getting there:
Follow the main road through Waiuiomata and turn left into Moores Valley Road and right into Whitcher Grove.  Go straight ahead to Reservoir Road and the main gates to meet the park ranger. Drop into an i-SITE Visitor Centre for a map or further information on the area.

 

Whitcher Grove has one of the featured Superior Gardens of the Hutt Valley.  While you're in the area, pay a visit to these magnificent gardens.
