Eastern Bays

The seaside villages of Days Bay and Eastbourne in the Eastern Bays are excellent places to experience another aspect of the Hutt Valley.

There are some great walkways and beaches but this is also a very upmarket area in the Wellington region.  Just strolling the streets looking at the houses and village shops and cafes is great fun.

To get you started, have a look at a suggested itinerary for the Eastern Bays.

Looking South

From Wellington's Queen's Wharf you can catch the East by West ferry across the harbour to Days Bay.  It's just a 20 minute ferry ride and great way to approach this beautiful part of the Wellington region.  Alternatively you can take your time and drive the road which winds through all the bays and villages.

This area is also full of history with great writers like Katherine Mansfield having been influenced by the peace and quiet, and there are stories of ship wrecks and taniwha

There are some great walks and cycle trips from the Eastern Bays.  The most popular tracks include Butterfly Creek and the track along the Pencarrow Coast to New Zealand's first lighthouse.
