Jackson Street, Petone

Jackson Street, Petone has grown over recent years to be the Hutt Valley's number one attraction for visitors.

Jackson Street is a heritage icon, combining an eclectic mix of old buildings with funky cafés, galleries and boutique shopping. The retail strip boasts a huge variety of specialty shops, cafés, bars and restaurants that supply a wide range of ethnic foods, great coffee and products not available anywhere else in New Zealand.

Step inside a story, not just a store.

A stroll along Jackson Street is a venture into history. Many of its buildings have stood for well over 100 years, and offer a unique glimpse into the life and times of early New Zealand.  An excellent place to step back in time is through the doors of the old Petone Police Station and Jail.

Jackson Street has some beautiful galleries such as LeSa and Oyster.

There are three coffee roasters in the area: Ripe, Celcius and Revive.  Go Bang cafe is run by the same owners of Ripe, Revive is in Nevis Street (off Jackson Street) and Celcius distribute through Palace Cafe; all are well worth a visit.

Some excellent dining opportunities are at Gusto Bistro and La Bella Italia.  But there are many more to choose from.

Unique shopping opportunities are up and down Jackson Street with some stand out names like:

  • Bookfeast - only sells cookbooks
  • Wanda Harland - very trendy homeware
  • Cultured - handcrafted NZ cheeses
  • OnTrays - delicatessen known locally as the South African Shop
  • NZique - made in NZ souvenirs and gifts
  • Swish Dish - paint your own plates
  • Village Beads - make your own jewellery
