Hutt City

Just 15 minutes north of Wellington is the second largest city in the Wellington region.  Hutt City is made up of Lower Hutt suburbs and CBD, Petone and Eastbourne on the harbour and the wilderness of Wainuiomata's Rimutaka Forest Park and access to Pencarrow Head.

The range of harbour, river, plains and mountain landscapes gives Hutt City unique appeal.  This unique appeal extends further to include the shopping, cafés, restaurantsarts and cultural experiences on offer.

Wellington’s thriving arts and cultural scene is strongly reflected in Hutt City.  Supporting this is TheNewDowse; a place that inspires creativity from multimedia to ceramics, fashion to photography, jewellery to sculpture, painting to furniture design and beyond.

Jackson Street in Petone is the place to go for shops with arts, crafts, fashion and food that you just won’t find anywhere else in New Zealand.  There are plenty of great cafes to take a break in too.  The largest and newest mall in the region is in Lower Hutt at Westfield Queensgate.  This is a more contemporary shopping experience mixed with some uniquely New Zealand shopping opportunities.

The seaside villages of Days Bay and Eastbourne in the Eastern Bays are excellent places to experience another aspect of the region.  There are some great walkways and the beaches but this is also a very upmarket area in the Wellington region.  Just strolling the streets looking at the houses and village shops and cafes is great fun.  This area is also full of history with great writers like Katherine Mansfield having been influenced by the peace and quiet, and there are stories of ship wrecks and taniwha.  Catch a ferry across the harbour to get the full experience.

You can’t beat the views of the valley, the harbour and back to Wellington from the top of a Hutt City hillside.  Hutt City is the gateway to the great outdoors with well-kept tracks that weave alongside rivers, through bush and over mountains.
